Federation Sea and Health

The Federation mer et sante was founded in 1986, in response to demand from doctors, scientists and the 'historical leaders ' of thalassotherapy, to reduce the negative impact on thalassotherapy of possible deviations popularly called 'thalasso', given the unchecked media promotion that went with a rush of new centres opening up.

The membership have to respect the Quality Charter. The Federation is the guarantee for the public and the authorities of the Quality of the care and the respect for the naming "Thalassotherapy" in France and to the foreigner.
 
Thalassotherapy : the official definition

Practised on a privileged coastal site, and under medical supervision with a view to prevention or cure, thalassotherapy means the combined use of all the beneficial aspects of the sea environment, viz. the climate, sea waterand various types of sea mud, seaweed, sand, and other substances derived from the sea.

It is important to distinguish :
Thalassotherapy and spas
Spa treatments (in French 'balnéothérapie') use ordinary water, because of the advantages of weightlessness. In the true sense of the word, they are always practised in a medical setting. The popular abbreviation 'balnéo' is now expanding in gymnasia, fitness and beauty centres, and in a form purely for pleasure as in jacuzzis, spas and places such as Center Parks ...
Thalassotherapy and physiotherapy
in a sea environment, which is specially for treating severe cases such as handicaps and after-effects of trauma and major surgery, and follows hospital-type protocols.

Thalassotherapy and thermal spring centres
which treat people using water in the same way (baths, showers, mud/seaweed applications, and so on), but thermal centres use spring water and never sea water.
